For over 15 years, the threat of Pebble Mine development has weighed heavily on the hearts and minds of people whose culture, ways of life, and businesses depend on the clean water and wild salmon of Alaska’s Bristol Bay. Today, we breathe a collective sigh of relief with the news that the U.S. Army Corps has denied Pebble Mine a key permit needed to advance the project. The work may not be over, but this step is an important victory.
We send our deepest gratitude to the Tribes, frontline organizations, and leaders who have led this battle and bore this burden for too long. Sitka Salmon Shares looks forward to continuing to support a future that is built on generating economic value from renewable fisheries resources in a way that honors the cultures, traditions, and ways of life that indigenous people of Bristol Bay have stewarded since time immemorial.
